Despite the promise of adaptive assessments and differentiated digital content to increase standards-based competencies, today’s students are reading less and struggling more with reading than their peers in 1960 (RRQ Research Study).
Technologies that are designed to deliver personalized reading instruction typically consist of one of the following:
Isolated Skill Building – identify discrete deficiencies and isolate instruction to overcome the issue.
Differentiated Texts – assign each student texts that match a predetermined reading level, to allow the student to apply skills during reading.
However, this approach – a focus on reading as a set of discrete, separate skills to be mastered – ignores how students actually experience reading.
When students read independently, their physical skills, cognitive abilities, and emotions are all working simultaneously. Yet most reading programs focus on only one of these three domains, and try to develop it by isolating it from the others.
Reading Plus takes a different approach to providing effective reading instruction. We use technology to do more than isolate or differentiate. We use it to focus on how and why students read. By integrating all three domains of reading, Reading Plus develops lifelong readers who see reading as a valuable means of cultivating knowledge, insight, and joy.
Building Lifelong Readers by Integrating the
3 DOMAINS OF READING
When students read independently, they don’t engage with each domain of reading in isolation from the others. They engage with all three simultaneously—and effective reading instruction must do the same.
The essential, yet overlooked key to fluency and stamina
Reading begins with a physical skill–the visual processing of text. When our eyes move across lines of print we extract the features of that text, and process it to construct meaning. This physical skill doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Students who labor to read haven’t yet developed it and fall behind in vocabulary and comprehension. They spend their energies trying to process words and have little left for comprehension and even less for developing their interests.
WHAT READING PLUS PROVIDES
PATENTED GUIDED WINDOW™ TO BUILD SILENT READING FLUENCY
This is what silent reading fluency looks like for struggling readers.
The red dot in the video below is an eye movement recording of a struggling reader. Students who labor to read haven’t developed physically efficient eye movement. Instead of easily scanning lines of text, their eyes stop, fixate, and regress. These students fall behind in vocabulary, comprehension and motivation.
This is what silent reading fluency looks like with Reading Plus.
The video below shows how the Reading Plus Guided Window develops the physical skills needed for silent reading fluency. The personalized rate at which text is presented is gradually increased to match each student’s reading rate and comprehension level. Physically efficient eye movement increases rate and stamina and makes reading more productive and comfortable.
TEXT SEGMENTATION TO INCREASE STAMINA
Texts are presented in shorter segments to ease stamina demands. As a student’s rate and comprehension increase, the length of the segments increases as well, which progressively builds the student’s reading stamina.
The Dominant Domain, Too Often Misunderstood
An emphasis on vocabulary and comprehension has dominated both the theory and practice of reading instruction for decades. Most approaches assume any performance improvement begins and ends with instruction and leveled practice. This is why many reading programs simply provide leveled texts and ask the student to apply the skills to their reading.
WHAT READING PLUS PROVIDES
PROPRIETARY VOCABULARY LIST TO HELP STUDENTS ACHIEVE ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Some words do more to help students achieve academic success. Reading Plus uses a proprietary, research-based list of foundational academic vocabulary. These 2,400 words are members of rich morphological families, so learning them provides students with a basis to recognize and understand 10,000 highly frequent, academic words within texts and across curriculum.
20 SUB-SKILLS TO BUILD MEANINGFUL COMPREHENSION
Reading Plus provides practice with 20 sub-skills to ensure students develop the ability to understand texts in a deep and meaningful way. Sub-skills are fully aligned with national and state standards for reading informational and literary texts.
READING / WRITING CONNECTION TO ENHANCE COMPREHENSION
Reading Plus provides writing tasks that encourage a close and critical analysis of texts. Writing prompts ask evidence-based questions that test students’ deep understanding of what they’ve read.
Student Interests Drive Confidence, Motivation, and Achievement
Measures of student interest correlate highly with academic performance. However, students most in need of improvement are rarely given opportunities to bring their personal interests into their reading practice. Instead, most reading programs focus on isolated cognitive skill development.
Ignoring student interests during reading development essentially guarantees a lower level of student engagement in reading. And students who aren’t engaged lose the opportunity to discover that reading is a way to learn more about who they are and who they can become.
WHAT READING PLUS PROVIDES
STUDENT CHOICE AND CONTROL TO INCREASE MOTIVATION AND DEVELOP INTERESTS
Students who can choose texts that interest them are more engaged in reading. More engaged students become better readers, and better readers become lifelong readers. Reading Plus lets students bring their personal interests into their reading practice by letting them choose texts from 8 high-interest categories.
STUDENT MOTIVATION MEASUREMENT TO SUPPORT TEACHERS
Research shows that highly motivated students read up to 3 times more than those with low motivation. Many programs claim to increase motivation, but few actually measure it. Reading Plus analyzes data and reports on students’ motivation. Teachers can measure and track progress on this key indicator of reading success.
PERSONAL READING PROFILE TO INCREASE STUDENT CONFIDENCE AND MOTIVATION
Reading Plus gathers information about student choices, progress, and gains, and converts that data into a simple, easy-to-read Student Reading Profile. It’s a powerful tool to help students increase motivation and build engagement in their own reading habits, interests, and progress.
