Reading Plus®, the leading silent reading intervention, is a key component in an ongoing United Way initiative in California.

The Northern Santa Barbara County (NSBC) United Way is including Reading Plus® in its United for Literacy program. The NSCB United Way’s mission, to “provide opportunities for people to improve their lives through education,” is being fulfilled, in part, by United for Literacy, a program committed to “helping children and youth achieve their potential.”

NSBC United Way is overseeing the implementation of the Reading Plus® system in numerous schools and community groups located in the northern California region served by the organization. NSCB United Way spokesperson Eddie Taylor told local NBC television affiliate KSBY, “If we all do a little we’ll accomplish great things.”

Reading Plus® is also involved with a United Way based in Denver. The Mile High United Way was the recipient of a generous commitment from a national philanthropic foundation to help fund the Reading Plus® system in private, charter, and public schools, as well as public libraries, in Colorado. To date, more than 50 schools throughout the state are implementing the Reading Plus® system as a result of Mile High United Way’s initiative.

Reading Plus® is a web-based reading intervention system that uses innovative technology to provide individualized scaffolded silent reading practice for students in primary and secondary schools as well as at the post-secondary level. The Reading Plus® system, designed in alignment with current reading research, develops and improves reading proficiency by providing extensive engagement in high-success, differentiated reading activities.
