Visagraph® III
Recording of the Oculomotor Activity

The Visagraph® eye-movement recording system provides an easy-to-use, short (5-7 minute) appraisal of the efficiency or fluency of the silent reading process that can be used for ongoing assessments during a Reading Plus® course of study. A student puts on a pair of goggles that contain infrared emitters and sensors and, as the student reads, his or her oculomotor process is recorded for computer analysis. Briefly, a Reading Report details the number of fixations and regressions, average duration of fixation, average span of recognition, and reading rate. In the Graphs section, there is a graphic display of the student’s reading process. Additionally, there is a Simulation available that displays the movement of the student's eyes over the text that was read. Finally, there is a Visual Functional Report that examines the similarity of the performance of the two eyes during reading that permits an evaluation of a student’s visual competence.

The Reading Report allows an educator to evaluate the relative efficiency of the student’s silent reading performance. Also important, there is data to show cross- correlation (percentage of time that the two eyes were performing alike) and visual anomalies (differences between the performance of the two eyes) allow judgments concerning the visual competence of the student for reading. Without information about oculomotor movement, which reflects a reader’s visual, perceptual, and information processing capability, how would an educator evaluate the true level of a student’s proficiency in silent reading?
